How do you get to work/school/shops?

Just wondering how people get around to the places that they go most often.

Do you walk or ride a bike, use public transport, or drive?

We work from home. So I chosen other 😁 I am happy to work from bed, don't really need even to move by any means 😁 sounds so bad…

We usually walk to the shops. But it depends where we live. Sometimes we can walk 8km one way to have a coffee and walk back.

But when we will have our own home, hopefully more rural we will use more a private car ( walking/running & bicycles for a short distances).

I walk or take a bus most of the time, depending on where I am going.

I don't own a car but can borrow one if I need to.

I live in a small town, we don't have a train station and there are not many buses, so it is really a choice between walking or driving most of the time.

I'll walk if I don't need to carry anything much, but of course if you are doing big shopping or something it's much easier to go by car.

I work at home most of time so it is not a problem to walk to the table.

I voted for the train as that I what I normally use for university. I started my current job during the lockdown over here so I don't travel as yet. But when we do go back to the office, I will be using the train to get there.

Afraid I jump in the car every time, but that is at least part because public transport just does not go easily between home and work, plus I need to travel around to sites for work once I'm there, and having the car is the only reasonable way to do it.

Luckily for us, the public transport in London is amazing so it's a lot easier for us to use it than drive to work. Unfortunately, the public transport in other parts of the UK just isn't as good.

Ash That's the problem, in a major city, especially a European one, you can get around with the public transport really well, but as soon as you work 10 miles out of the city that just doesn't work anymore.

100%. I mean, I get annoyed if I have to wait another 15-20 minutes for a bus. The bus schedule for the areas outside of the big cities must be awful and a lot worse than that.

I hope they are at least all space out though, I used to live in a little commuter town where there were about 20 buses but they were all between 7-8 in the morning and then 5-6 in the afternoon. Later, earlier, or in the middle there was nothing.

Wow, crazy lol. I mean, I kind of understand why they don't run more buses but at the same time, it's awful that people without a car can't use public transport whenever they want.

Well it is a village of around 25 people. They probably decided that they do not have enough possible passengers for more.

Wow, that's actually quite smaller than I expected it to be. I'm surprised they even run 3 services a day for just 25 people but that is quite good of them. Do you know if there are a lot of people that use it every day?

Ash It is on the road between some bigger places.

When schools reopened in London, they had special school buses for the kids because there were limits to how many people could get on. Like you mentioned Julie, they would run them only at certain points. Problem was that they didn't take into consideration the opening times of all the schools in the area so some kids missed the buses.

The other really annoying thing about that was that they let regular adults onto the school buses which would create problems with space. But the school kids weren't allowed at all on the regular buses.

Some countries with a good trains infrastructure makes bigger free of charge parkings in rural areas or just next to the cities and you can easily jump into a train/city trains-metros systems.

For example in Denmark they have busses connections when they wait basically in the middle of nowhere for another route bus so you can easily change it and don't worry. As we they are according to the trains timing. I lived 8 km away so sometimes had a chance just simple to walk.

If you get used to the trains it is quite hard to go back to busses.

Piri The parking situation in London is always awful so I guess that helps a lot in getting people to use public transport here.
