Eco friendly gift idea?

I need to buy a gift for my mom.

She does not have many hobbies, she also does not care much about how eco the things she buys are, but I do. I want to buy an eco-friendly gift that she will actually like but I don't have any thoughts right now.

Anybody have a suggestion or some ideas of eco gifts you have bought for other people recently?

I just recently bought something very practical as a gift… Who Gives A Crap toilet paper - it is sustainable, Bcorp, and 50% profit goes to the important purpose. Well my parents thought it is fun and they liked it. 😁

As well did the same with kitchen cloths 😅

Luffa seeds were very good gift as well because they grew successfully so it is in use and my Mom uses it as gifts for others as well.

Sustainable socks from Ūkai is on my list for Dad. And it was a gift for ourselves 😂

On my list is German company for cleaning products Klaeny.

And we received very nice organic Linen sheets and towels, was nice as we didn't have any, but people usually have lots at home.

So everything quite boring, but super practical.

We donated aswell some trees to Pasodinkmedi.lt the certificate is quite cute so it was a great gift for a family with a small girl, at least we thought so.

I don't think that she would be into getting toilet paper or cleaning products, but maybe socks or some sustainable clothes or some kind of planting or other action that gives a certificate.

You can never have too much toilet paper, it's one of the last things you will stop buying however relatively poor you might be at any moment of your life.

Absolutely agree with this, but with 'handmade' gifts try to make them actually good or useful. There is nothing worse than being expected to pretend you love something ugly or useless just because someone made it for you, and then keep it around gathering dust for them to see whenever they visit.

There is an article about this in Issue 5 of Towards Sustainability, it's about Christmas gifts mostly but the principle remains the same whatever the occasion, making some handmade food gifts, or sharing an experience that you wouldn't normally have time for with someone are great gifts in place of something disposable that they really don't need.

People think that a gift item must be new but I bought my sister a beautiful dress in a second owner shop, the price was not high but it is her style and more sustainability friendly than to buy a new one. I will look in these shops again for gift items in the future.

I love this. Most people would never consider buying gifts in a second hand shop, but if it is in good condition and clean it is as good as new, you can pack it beautifully, it's more circular economy friendly, and you get something that is unique and not the same as everyone else is wearing from the mall chain stores right now. 👏

I buy almost all of the clothes for myself and as gifts for other people in the second owner shops. I do not like it for shoes so much because I do not like the idea of the feet of other people, but with clothes you get more unusual and interesting choices and more sustainable at the same time.

Does she have any hobby that includes making anything?

If yes then you can always buy some sustainable materials. Like organic cotton or wool if someone likes to sew or knit, or some sustainable material for any other kind of creative hobby.

That is true… even without skills it is possible to make some nice items, I tried a couple years ago from organic linen ( well of course you can make from any fabrics you have at home) some things, worked out well. Just don't get why my Mom keeps kitchen towel like a table decoration.

I get probably half of my clothes from used shops or websites but I didn't buy things as gifts there until now. It's a good idea though, I ordered a 1970's flowery dress that I hope my mom will like, and if she does not I can find a home for it in my closet.

Clothes shopping is a pleasure, especially if someone has a nice shape like you do, it should be a joy to buy clothes.

When you are short and dumpy like me it's a much bigger challenge, but the challenge is part of the fun. 😁

I do not love the shopping as well, but I like it more in the small second owner shops than the big busy mall stores, they are more quiet and more relaxed.

The toilet paper idea is nice but as mentioned above, it's probably not the best thing to be giving it out as a gift really. There are some pretty cool eco-friendly gifts out there though that are much better like sustainable equipment for the kitchen or even donations to charities that focus on fighting deforestation or helping endangered animals.
