Non vegan beer

I just overheard a big discussion in a bar between the barman and a vegan lady. She was really angry and hostile about the fact that he did not know which of the beers that they have in the bar was vegan and which not.

I thought that beer was basically yeast, hops, grains and water, and they are all vegan (I think yeast is), so what makes a beer not vegan?

It is not just about beers, it is about many alcoholic beverages.

About beer - Isinglass, gelatin, glycerin, casein are considered vegan unfriendly ingredients which you can find in many beers. As well craft beers might have some hidden unusual ingredients like honey or what ever.

Heineken and Corona are for sure well known and vegan! And Guinness Is vegan, I think they have all of their beer now in this way.

Nowadays I think it is important to be ready to serve the clients needs and at least to know one vegan beer in the bar you work. In another hand if you are not interested in argument you can just Google yourself which beer is vegan and order, or if you are vegan and drink I don't believe you don't know which beer is vegan.

Piri That's good information, thank you. I don't know about all of these ingredients or that they are in most beers.

Depends maybe on the bar, if it is specialised or has craft beers then the staffs should know about them all, the highstreet bars with general beers maybe not so much though.

I guess he would have made the same mistake as me and just assumed there wasn't really any vegan beers. Just learned a new thing today.

It's not so hard to find vegan beer and it's normally quite clearly labelled. Most bars or shops will have at least one or two.

Wine on the other hand, seems much harder.

Agree with it. Just because Corona you can find all around the world and with wines is different. And if you want organic or natural one it will get even more difficult. But you still can find very affordable vegan wines.

I think it is on both sides here. If you work anywhere selling something you should know the basics about the products, whether they are shoes or beer.

But if you are a customer and have specific needs then you should also do the research to know what options you can buy, especially when we all have phones with internet now.

Yes, the barman should have known but the customer really didn't need to make a big thing out of it.

I think that in some way she was right, but there is never a reason to be angry and rude to staff like that.
