Flight to Latvia or Lithuania

Hey guys,

I've worked out my plan and I will be leaving the US and moving myself to Lithuania in July this year.

I want to start out this new part of my life in the way that I plan to continue it, the greenest way I can. I'm trying to plan how to travel there in the most eco-friendly way I can, but I am not sure what that is. I'm in Chicago and I want to end up in Lithuania, my aunt lives in Siauliai, so that is where I would be going first. It looks like the nearest airports are Riga or Kaunas.

Is there one more friendly airline that people would recommend, and what are the green transport options to get to Siauliai?

Is it maybe another option to fly to somewhere else in Europe, a shorter flight, and then to travel by a train or something?

I have some time to plan it but it is exciting and I would like to get it all worked out as long before I am going to travel as I can. That's hard at the moment with coronavirus still around but I would still love any ideas or suggestions.

Well I would recommend to fly to Riga as to reach Siauliai is super easy at any time even at night from the airport by bus (did it many times). Actually often you can see in Skyscanner the most eco friendly flights with a green leaf.

If you choose to fly to Vilnius you can take a train to Siauliai, it is quite fast and nice trip. In that case you need to go to Vilnius train station and after to Siauliai. Be aware trains don't go every hour.

With international flights, you are going to have a lot more options going to Riga than to Kaunas or Vilnius, and in any case you are not going to have a massive number of different airlines to choose from.

Direct flights are pretty much out, so you will need to change in one of the bigger European hubs, or maybe Scandinavia or Warsaw. If you are changing flight in the UK then you might also find some flights to Palanga (which is the airport next to Klaipeda).

Yes, Riga and Kaunas are around same distance to Šiauliai but there are really much more flight choices to Riga.

And it's probably easier to get there with public transport from Riga if you do not have the car or someone to come and get you. If you are cute, single and rich, I can come and get you from the airport 😉

You can check atmosfair, they make an index of the most sustainable airlines. Last time I looked it up KLM and Canadian were good for long flights from USA to Europe.

Julie Brooks-Girskiene hi Julie hopefully you will get a lift 😁 and will love being in Lithuania! It is a wonderful country like all Baltics! Once we got an offer from taxi driver (he was from Siauliai). I believe there are services like this and maybe with e-cars. 🙂

Personally I'm more for the taxi than a bus or maybe a relative or someone will come and pick us up from Siauliai. It is still a long time off and we will need to wait and see how the coronavirus situation is by the middle of the year because maybe nobody will be moving anywhere yet.

Well if Stasys is having LTU passport it makes things easier even with Corona! 🙂 But let's hope the situation will be different in any case!

I am a European citizen though because my mom was Irish and I have an Irish passport as well as my US one.

We use the City Bee car Sharing often, you can rent a car for up to one month without changing, the only minus is that you can get and leave it in only in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda. But it is super easy to pick and leave and drive around the country. You just need to download an app, upload the driving license and bank card.

I'm going to book the flight tickets to Riga, there are a few different routes that work out. We will see which one has the best price and is listed as being most green in a few months when we see the Corona situation, then book the best option and offset the carbon.

Stasys-Girskis I hope you are not expecting a big and exciting international airport to arrive to. I have never been to Chicago airport but I am sure it is much bigger than Riga 😆

We flew to Vilnius once and to Riga once, both of the times were via London.

I'm sure if you fly into any of the big European hubs then it is easy to get across Europe from there, but London seemed to have the most connections to the Lithuania and Latvia, much more than Paris or Amsterdam.

With all of the coronavirus chaos of this year we have had to put the moving plan back to the end of the year or the start of the next one.

I'm guessing that the flight options are not going to change much in the meantime though.

I guess that there will be more options as long as none of the airlines have gone out business but I think they all made it through the pandemic crisis as far as I know?
