How often do you think about an impact on the environment when buying cut blossoms….??? 🌻 🌷 🌼
All the time I had an idea how unsustainable the industry of flower can be… and the last days read quite shocking facts about the industry of cut blossoms.
For it is mostly international industry, so impact of transportation and refrigerators is already huge.
For example around 75 percent of cut flowers sold in the United States originate in Colombia. In Europe we think it comes from The Netherlands is still the world’s largest producer of cut flowers, but around 40 percent comes from Kenya.
Pesticides are very commonly used, for example some studies in Colombia reveled that workers were exposed to 127 different types of pesticides and that female workers and the wives of male workers developed reproductive issues.
Pesticide and water use in Kenya played a role in the drying up of Lake Naivasha and the die-offs of fish populations.
This is just a couple of facts not thinking about the daily waste and ect.
There are just so small amount of local domestic ecological approach flowers farms…
