Does anybody know if SodaStream is more or less sustainable than buying bottles of carbonated drinks?

Egle-K Hmmm I would say yes because you use reusable bottles and you can refill the CO2 thingy. You can simple use tap water. So if you like fizzy thingies why not. But just incase you use it often other wise it is just one more kitchen item on the shelf collecting dust.

It uses tap water and many less bottles so it probably is more sustainable if you drink a lot of soda. Didn't they have some controversy and ethical issues about something to do with Palestine a few years ago, I think I remember seeing some protest about it outside of the store.

They did, it was related to having a factory in the West Bank and claiming that the products were made in Israel. They don't have that factory anymore, and the company had also been bought by PepsiCo since then.

A bit off-topic but do people actually like sparkling water? I accidentally drank it once and I was disgusted. Almost wanted to spit the water out.

Ash There is a huge amount of sparkling water or other drinks so for sure someone likes. And you can make not just sparkling water, but any other sparkly drink with it

I never had a sodastream machine, can you use it to make plain wine sparkling?

Vilte I never had a sodastream machine, can you use it to make plain wine sparkling? You can use it to make anything fizzy, but some of the things explode out of the bottles. I am not certain about what the wine does.

It used to be popular over 20 years ago and it was a service even in a small villages. Was actually environment friendly as it was one machine in the village and reusable bottles. People really used it a lot.

Well I didn't see it for long time so I am not sure it is popular as now it is full of different soda drinks (just after independence it was not so much of the choice).

But it is popular thing communities in the villages it is for culture and for small run businesses by communities to generate some money.

For example my parents community press juices, granny's community opened a village cafe. As well my parents community does many activities like some celebrations, cleaning actions, kids summer camps, ect.

It does, it's cheaper for everyone, you don't have to store things that you probably only use once a year, and more sustainable because they make less.

There is the system and people are responsible and appreciate. And usual people kind of know each other at least faces. And there are always and everywhere so not so good persons so you never know, but not everyone can easily move far away so it makes you to behave a bit different.

I think that it's a size of village thing rather than a country thing. In small places people tend to behave better because they don't feel that sense of anonymity that lets them get away with doing whatever they want in big cities.

It depends as well on the city, some big cities have distinct neighbourhoods and they feel like a lot of individual villages just all joined together. You can find community and community activities everywhere if you look for it, but for a few decades we all stopped looking, maybe that is changing again now though.

Probably it is what would happen if I had one, that would be fun and used for a little while until the gas runs and I need the space for another thing and then it would end up put away somewhere.
