Treebeard Do you drink a lot of coffee and what do you feel about the above
I am a heavy coffee drinker... Coffee and the other plants like cacao, avocados has a big CO2 impact, but all of it comes because of the unsustainable farming practices. The good news that it might be changed. It is similar issues with most of unsustainable agriculture.
Coffee trees are great for biodiversity and they don't need to be replaced an each year as for example soybeans. They create the shadow and is taking a part in creating the environment for different wildlife. If the ecosystem is healthy the quality of coffee beans will be better (for example it will stay longer on the tree) and the harvest will be better. Coffee plantations might be grown together with another plants. The challenge is the water pollution and waste, but some farms already are working on the water waste management and recycling.
If you buy coffee for home at least what you can do always to choose organic beans, for that it is important to know the place of origin for example in Mexico almost all produced coffee is organic. In Brazil coffee farmers implementing the sustainable agriculture models.
